A Great Success to the Dili Model United Nations (DMUN) 2015

10 June 2017

The 2015 DMUN held at the Ministry of Social Solidarity, Caicoli, Dili,  from 17 - 19 July gave an impressive outcome, despite being the first Model United Nations (MUN) ever held in Timor-Leste. The thought of realizing the DMUN came up by two young Timorese, Rose and Ariel Mota (a current Scholar at UWC Adriatic). Without hesitation, the two work on proposal and finally received fund from the US Embassy in Dili to support the event.

Timorese UWCers in collaboration with Timor-Leste Youth for Peace (TLYFP) members prepared and organized the DMUN with the theme on “Creating a sustainable peaceful society, through alliance of civilizations and international cooperation in sectors of security, justice and equality”. The DMUN comprised of 78 delegates were selected through an intensive selection process and designated into the five committees: UN Security council, UN Women, UN Human Rights council, UN Development Program and UN Environment Program.

The opening was attended by some of the key people in Timor-Leste, including H.E. Dr Jose Ramos Horta, Nobel Peace Prize laureate from Timor-Leste, and Mr Knut Ostby, UN Representative to Timor-Leste, and Mr. Scott Hartmann, Public Affairs Officer from the U.S. Embassy in Timor-Leste. The event ended with a General Assemble discussion on Sustainable Development and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
