Live from Vatican

10 June 2017

On May 11, UWC Adriatic (UWCAD) was invited to participate in "Fabbrica della Pace 2015", which provided an opportunity for children and young people across Italy to meet with Pope Francis. Here is the story!

On this occasion, Ariel and his co-year from Nigeria, had a chance to speak (in Italian) to hundreds of kids in Sala Nervi, Vatican State. He spoke of his essay, selected by UWC Adriatic (UWCAD), on Cos'è significa la pace per i bambini del Timor Est? or What does Peace mean to children in Timor-Leste? In his essay, he explained how the absence of war does not always bring peace. However, to him, peace is when children can go to school; eat and enjoy their childhood; are not obligated to work; and are not being subjected to any form of violence.

He also presented Timor-Leste culture by wearing his national costume. Many have not heard of Timor-Leste, so he had to give a brief introduction about Timor-Leste which he described it as a small island in South East Asia located next to Australia.

His essay is included in a printed copy along with other essays from his co-years on Armenian Genocide, Nigeria, Egypt and Mexico; which was later given to Pope Francis.

It was just like a dream; which became true for him!
